Episode 192: "Give me a Cryptid over a Phantom Menagerie any day"

October 9, 2024

We are in our second week of Urban Legends October and this week we are featuring legends from Scotland!
First up, Kala talks about the myths known as Selkies and Kelpies. They are both shapeshifting creatures known for haunting the waters, but have very different temperaments. While stories of the Selkies portray them as sweet creatures who encounter tragic circumstances, Kelpies are malevolent creatures who create tragic circumstances.
And Brittany tells us the tale of A75 Kinmount Straight, also known as “The Ghost Road.” If you dare to travel this highway, beware that humans (and possibly chickens, wild cats, dogs, and phantoms?) may run out in front of your vehicle at any given moment. But you don’t have to worry about a crash because when you pull over, you will find they were never actually there (OooooOooo... spooky...). Many a lorry driver have shared their stories... and we're pretty sure this is a road we will never want to drive down. If not because of the ghosts, it’s because of ✨anxiety ✨.

Episode 191: “Wife Poisons Husband with Candy”

October 2, 2024

Happy Urban Legends October, everyone!
We’ve got two stories that are perfect for putting you in the mood for the Halloween season. Kala tells the tale of Stingy Jack, the origin story for Jack O’ Lanterns. When Jack ticked off the Devil by tricking him one too many times, he was forced to wander the afterlife for eternity, never entering Heaven or Hell, with only the light of a fire inside a turnip to light his way. How in the heck does this become the spooky carved pumpkins we know today? Once combined with other folk tales and natural progression of traditions, you will see.
And Brittany tells us all about Clara Crane AKA The Candy Lady. The reason for her nickname is not so sweet. After the tragic death of her daughter, she blamed her husband and used sweets to take her revenge. Later on, kids started disappearing. It turns out mystery candy had been showing up with notes from “The Candy Lady” asking if they could come out and play. The ones that did weren’t seen again. How much of this story is truth, and how much is urban legend? This story will make sure you never take candy from strangers.

Episode 190: "I'm a professional Skeptic"

September 25, 2024

We have an iconic episode this week, because we’re covering two absolute icons. First up, Kala talks about Joan Crawford, who may have been haunted and/or haunted others. There is no denying her impact in Hollywood, but has she remained past her death? When her estranged daughter’s classic movie “Mommie Dearest” was filmed, the set was plagued with strange activity, especially around the actress who was set to play Crawford in the film. But it turns out the paranormal activity may have existed before Crawford passed. And Brittany talks about the only sea monster to rival Nessie: Champ of Lake Champlain. This creature is known around the world. And while many places write off these beings as explorers mistaking fish for something more sinister, the evidence for Champ is more compelling than most! Evidence so bananas that you may be able to see it on Netflix before you know it! We end the episode with two intriguing listener stories! Make sure to join us next week for the start of our fourth annual Urban Legends October!

Episode 189: "Let's go, girls!"

September 18, 2024

Kala’s got two locations for you this week, which are often discussed at the same time. The Tennessee State Prison and the Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary are located about an hour and a half away from each other, and both are plagued by paranormal activity brought on by years of overcrowding, violence, and general ill-treatment. While the TSP was basically demolished by a tornado in 2020, Brushy is still available for tours. Will you encounter the ghost who is still having nicotine cravings, or try to escape the heat with the cold spots in the chapel? And Brittany tells us about the badass, Giulia Tofana. This woman continued the work of her mother Thofania d'Adamo, who created the elixir known as Aqua Tofana. Through the 17th-century whisper network, this poison saved women from abusive arranged marriages for decades. While we would never condone this activity today, the women of this era didn’t seem to have any other choice. And it would seem that Giulia Tofana was a hero to more people than we can count.

Episode 188: “Inappropriate, Melissa!”

September 11 2024

We went a bit off the rails this week, so prepare for a giggle. First up, Kala discusses The Mammoth Cave system in Kentucky. Mummies, ghosts, and getting lost in deep dark caves. It’s straight up out of a horror film. And Brittany tells us all about Gef the talking mongoose… which is exactly as ridiculous as it sounds. For years, a family lived with this spirit in the form of a mongoose inside of their house’s walls. Was it really a spirit? Or something more sinister? Either way, Gef certainly was wacky, man.

Episode 187: "The Unusually Ambitious Mongoose"

August 28, 2024

As summer fades and fall peeks it’s head around the corner, we’re always keeping it creepy here. First Kala discusses the cryptid known as the Chupacabra. A fairly new creature by most cryptid standards, this weird animal escapes any common description. Is it a coyote with glowing red eyes? Is it a kangaroo with bat like wings? The only thing people can seem to agree on is that it’s creepy and it’s killing livestock! But is it real? Or is there a scientific explanation behind the nocturnal, animal-killing beast? And Brittany tells us about the Fairbanks Memorial Hospital in Alaska. This active medical facility may not have the terrible history of many of the abandoned hospitals that we’ve covered on the podcast, but it still has its ghosts. Apparitions, phantom footsteps, cold spots, and other paranormal occurrences are so common in this building that they even have methods to address it with patients and staff. And apparently this isn’t the only haunted active hospital, because Brittany had Reddit stories from other hospitals’ staff members with their own creepy stories!

Episode 186: "There are a variety of overalls to consider..."

August 28, 2024

We are getting close to the end of summer, so we've got some stories this week that just scream "vacation time". First up, Kala talks about Captain Tony's Saloon in Key West, Florida. This bar features tropical drinks, an 'old school Key West' atmosphere, a hanging tree growing inside, some gravestones, bras on the ceiling, and ghosts! What a wide variety of items to create such a unique atmosphere. When you're out partying, just remember to avoid the first stall in the bathroom, and absolutely do not climb the tree! And Brittany tells us all about the Great Minnesota Get Together! That's right, the Minnesota State Fair is haunted. While out searching for food on a stick, you could run into some specters dancing in overalls! Or maybe you'll get a tap on the shoulder while riding Ye Olde Mill! It sounds like all the ghosts are pretty harmless, and we wouldn't mind seeing them for ourselves. Except the pigman. No one wants to run into the pigman.

Episode 185: "Who the hell is Joe Cocker?"

August 21, 2024

We’ve got two Midwest stories this week all inspired my music… kinda. First Kala talks about a location in the hometown of one of her favorite bands Hawthorne Heights: Dayton, Ohio! The Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum is a massive, old cemetery filled with gorgeous trees, beautiful structures, amazing mausoleums, and ghosts! Will you see the little girl in the white sneakers? Or the little boy forever playing with his dog? Or the dancing Russian ballerina? There are many stories, and they’re all surprising consistent. And Brittany tells us all about the historic First Avenue in Minneapolis, Minnesota. This iconic music venue got its start as a bus depot, and it seems like some of the spirits may not realize the change. Staff have encountered apparitions, voices, and phantom touches. Next time you head out onto their dance floor, you might just be joined my more than the living.

Episode 184: "Because.... Australia"

August 14, 2024

It's Brittany's Birthday Spooky Spectacular! The birthday girl starts us off with the tale of the Goat Man of Prince George's County. This half-goat, half-man creature has been well known in Maryland since the 1970s. With an appetite for puppies and humans alike, this is definitely not a cryptid you want to stumble upon. And then as a present for Brittany, Kala has scoured Reddit threads to find people's creepiest experiences. Some are paranormal, and some are just normal, but at the end of the episode we both agree on the same thing: sometimes humans are the scariest creatures of all.

August 7, 2024

Yes, we’re a paranormal podcast, but this week we’re also a paranormal drama podcast! We’ve got the hot goss on one of the most famous haunted locations in the United States, The Conjuring House. In the last couple of years, things have gone a bit off the rails, and we’ve got the full story so you don’t have to dig for yourself. What happens when the ghosts of a house tell a boss how to handle their employees? The biggest scare of all is unpaid wages. And Brittany tells us all about The Monte Cristo Historic Homestead in Junee, Australia. There are at least 10 ghosts who haunt Monte Cristo; including the original owners, former servants, and children. At least one of these ghosts HATES animals. The owner of The Conjuring House might claim that their location is the most haunted place in the world, but we think The Monte Cristo definitely has it beat.

Episode 182: “Everything is coming up Johan!”

July 31, 2024

It is our last episode of July! Where has the summer gone? Kala starts it off with one of her great passions: Wrestling. She tells the tale of the haunting of "Rowdy" Roddy Piper. This famous, larger-than-life man made connections throughout his career, some of which kept going after the people had passed. While the haunting may be a topic of debate, Kala is choosing to do what she has always done with wrestling: suspend her belief and cheer on the wrestlers. Brittany talks about The Exorcism of Gottliebin Dittus, which happened in Mottlingen, Germany. Have you ever heard of a three word phrase being the end of an exorcism? Neither have we. But apparently, in the most Lutheran exorcism ever, all this demon had to hear was "Jesus is Victor" and he hit the road. The question is... who is Victor? (Insert Kala laughing at her own joke here.)

Episode 181: "I like this weird mishmash of bodies"

July 24, 2024

This week is Kala’s birthday episode! She celebrates by telling you all about the Danvers State Hospital in Danvers, Massachusetts. Once a psychiatric hospital in the late 1800s (with all the horrible history that goes along with that) it is now the site of luxury apartments. But would you want to pay top dollar to be surrounded by apparitions and disembodied screams? And Brittany gifts both Kala and you listeners with tales of the spooky activity in the Appalachian Mountains. Cryptids, spirits, and bears! Oh my! Don’t go out for a midnight stroll out there, you may not come back.

Episode 180: “For the living and the dead to enjoy”

July 17, 2024

To start off this week, Kala tells us about Fort McHenry in Baltimore, Maryland, which is actually the inspiration behind The Star-Spangled Banner! This Historical Shrine has played a key role in multiple wars, and it has the ghosts to prove it. The spirits of those who died to protect the United States are still lingering at their posts well into their afterlife. And Brittany talks about Elmwood Cemetery in Memphis, Tennessee. This is kind of the "compliment sandwich" of ghost stories by including a cute story, a tragic story, and then ending with another cute story. Who will you encounter at Elmwood Cemetery? The group of besties meeting for their morning chats, the woman who was driven to kill the love of her life, or the ghost who is just fascinated with modern plumbing? Either way, you're sure to be scared.
Editors Note: People from Memphis are called Memphians, apparently.

Episode 179: "... now we're just naming pits."

July 10, 2024

It may be summer outside, but we're keeping it creepy here on the podcast. Kala had a special seeeeester birthday request for a haunted museum, and so she covered world's largest museum, education, and research complex, The Smithsonian Institute! Considering how many artifacts these buildings hold, it's no surprise that some ghosts have come along with them. And it's not just visitors who have had experiences, the staff has lots of tales to tell too! And Brittany talks about the legend of The Green Children of Woolpit. Years ago, two children were found next to a pit full of angry, snarling wolves (okay... not really. It was just a pit). What makes this situation even weirder? The kids were green! Where did they come from? Were they fae? Aliens? Sickly humans? Sadly, with this happening so many centuries ago, we may never know for sure.Thank you so much for listening! If you haven't had a chance, we would love it if you could rate and subscribe to our podcast wherever you listen to all your favorite paranormal podcasts!

Episode 178: "That's weird, right?!"

July 3, 2024

This week has us asking “How often do coincidences actually happen?” First, Kala talks about precognitive dreams (premonitions). There is a long history of us receiving warnings in our sleep. Should we heed every bad dream? What’s the risk if we don’t? And Brittany revisits weird coincidences throughout history. These stories are so weird, right? You might be able to say one or two examples are just by chance, but Brittany has way more than one or two examples. Do both of our stories include weird things that people say are coincidences? Do both of our stories have us asking “That’s weird, right?” Do both of our stories involve Abe Lincoln? The answer is yes to all three. What are the chances?

June 26, 2024

Happy Spooky Wednesday, dear listeners! This week we've got a special guest! Singer & Songwriter, Park Ranger, and all-around awesome person: Duluth's Famous Kaylee Matuszak! She joins us for a conversation full of spooky stories, side tangents, and #FunFacts. First up, Kala revisits a topic she covered over three years ago, on the very first episode of the podcast: the S.S. William A. Irvin. This ship is a floating museum in Duluth's Canal Park and hosts a Haunted Ship Attraction every October. But what about the ghosts that stick around all year? We get not only the stories Kala found on the internet but personal experiences from Kaylee as well! And Brittany tells us about Hyde Hall in Cooperstown, New York. Built in the early 1800s, this mansion has exhibited haunted activity for two centuries! If you dare to visit, who will you encounter? Will it be Jenny, the ghost of a woman who absolutely hates it when you mess with her portrait? Or will it be George Clarke, the man who had the home built, and has been seen on multiple occasions, roaming in the halls in his favorite gold, green, and red bathrobe? Or one of the other numerous spirits that still reside in the building?

Episode 176: "They had a ball-room"

June 19, 2024

We've got a classic haunting and a major coincidence on the docket this week. I know what you're thinking? A major coincidence? How is that Spooky-Wednesday-worthy? Trust us... you'll want to hear this. But first, Kala talks about the George Stickney House in Woodstock, Illinois. This building is now a police headquarters, but it was once the home of devout spiritualists who commissioned the building to be built with zero sharp corners to better communicate with the dead. After decades of seances, it seems some of those spirits may have stuck around, and are now spending their time pestering police officers. Now, about that coincidence... What if we told you that there were two murders so similar you might think there was a copy cat killer? Now what if we told you they were over 100 years apart? And what if we told you the details were so similar not even a copy cat could pull it off? This is a wild ride, folks. You don’t want to miss it.

June 12, 2024

This week we're finishing up our U.S. takeover. Kala realized that there we hadn't covered any locations in two different states, and she needed to rectify this issue immediately. So she covered Wood Island Light in Maine and McRaven House in Mississippi. The Wood Island Light seems like your standard haunted lighthouse, until you hear about the tragedy that took place on the property. And the McRaven House has traded hands so many times with so many different types of people, it's like a variety pack of ghosts. And Brittany keeps it Midwesty by talking about Ashwaubenon Bowling Alley in Green Bay, WI. This is the king of all bowling alleys! So much so that bowling enthusiasts continue to hang out there even in the afterlife. The good news is that as a ghost, you probably don't have to pay to rent shoes anymore.

Episode 174: “Freedom fighters and food folk”

June 5, 2024

It's opposite day at Left of Skeptic. First up, Kala talks about Jinny Bingham's ghost in Camden Town, London. Also known as Mother Damnable and Mother Redcap, Jinny was a 1600s woman who was known in her small village for witchcraft and murder! But was she really a witch, or just a woman with a whole lot of bad luck. Either way, it seems her misfortune carries into the present day, haunting the location where her cottage once stood. And Brittany gets midwesty by talking about two different locations in Battle Creek, Michigan. A haunted apartment complex called Colombia Court is dealing with more than your average pests. Residents can expect to deal with doors opening on their own, lights turning on and off, whispers and disembodied voices, footsteps, and flying cookware! And in a Battle Creek Cemetery, there is a statue that is definitely not the Virgin Mary, and locals claim that it cries. We finish the whole episode off with some Reddit stories from Wisconsinites that claim they've had their own paranormal encounters.

Episode 173: "These ghosts are ruining their social lives"

May 29, 2024

Summer has started and we've got some stories to put you in the mood for the warmer weather. First up, Kala talks about haunted theme park attractions, and honestly, some of these stories are a total bummer. But the hauntings that follow these tragedies will be giving you "spooky carnival" vibes for sure. From a creepy carousel all the way to a haunted house that caused a park to become actually haunted, we've got it covered. And Brittany talks about Elke Sommer’s ghost story. Elke and her husband Joe Hyams were Hollywood elite, and were excited to move into their new Beverly Hills home back in the 1960s. Well...they were excited...until they realized they weren't alone in the house. For four years they were plagued by strange noises, shadow figures, and ghosts that seemed determined to ruin their social lives. And it turns out it wasn't just them! Previous owners had experiences too. If a ghost is bad enough to make you want to deal with buying and selling a house that quickly, it's got to be pretty bad, right?

Episode 172: “It was built for the living. Duh.”

May 22, 2024

This week Kala keeps it Midwest by talking about Bowers Harbor Inn on the Old Mission Peninsula in Michigan. This building is home to the ghost of a woman “known well” in local legends. And by “known well,” we mean incorrectly described. But just because the local legend is wrong doesn’t mean the haunting isn’t real. And Brittany tells us all about The Riddle House, which is now part of Yesteryear Village in Palm Beach, Florida. This former funeral home has a complicated and tragic history that has resulted in a pretty violent haunting. Let’s just say you better keep your tools, ladders, and windows tucked away if you want them to stay in good condition. May 15, 2024

We've got aliens and cryptids for you this week! First up, Kala talks about the Kelly-Hopkinsville Encounter, famous for being the start of the "little green men" description of aliens. In the 1950s, a farm house in Kentucky was visited by strange little creatures from outer space, and that family's lives were never the same again. But was it really aliens? Or was it a meteor... and some owls. Because apparently that makes more sense to some people. And Brittany talks about the Floridian cryptid known as The Skunk Ape. This smelly, strong, aggressive, cannibalistic creature as been lurking in Florida's nature for centuries. Is it a paranormal creature? An escaped zoo animal? An ancient creature that humans just never catalogued? We think the most important question is: Why does it like lima beans?

When Kala visited this city with her mom and aunt last July, she heard about one haunted location, but she had no idea how many more existed in the small city. Was there really that much nefarious activity in all these old buildings, or does the underground tunnel system mean that they all share hauntings? And Brittany talks about the real life story of The Herrmann House, the inspiration behind the horror movie classic know as Poltergeist! For over a month, this family was plagued by paranormal activity at the hands of a spirit they called “Popper”. Was there really a ghost? Was it the preteen child, Jimmy? Or was there a scientific explanation? We have no idea, but we have some theories!

t’s the moment Kala has been waiting for (at least for the last 99 episodes): EPISODE 169!
Kala starts us off by taking about Incubus/Succubus/Incubi/Succubi, or as she calls them, BiBus. These evil spirits are known for sneaking into mortals homes and engaging in demonic trysts! But are they real, or just a product of a time that didn’t have science on its side?
And Brittany talks about the sexiest cryptid she could find, that we haven’t already covered (Sorry Mothman). The Cadborosaurus, aka Caddy, is a kind of sea serpent found in the Pacific Coast. With a serpentine body and the head of either a horse or a camel or a bear, it’s guaranteed to freak you out if you see it. First up, Kala tells us all about the Wyoming Frontier Prison in Rawlins, Wyoming. This building opened in the early 1900s, and like all prisons from that time, it has a terrible history of mistreating prisoners and horrible conditions. Add in a bit of the "wild west frontier" vibe, and you've got the perfect recipe for a haunting. And Brittany, as she hinted at last week, tells us about The Dakota in New York City, New York. This Upper West Side Manhattan apartment building is home to many rich and famous people, and has been throughout its history. But an outrageous rent is not keeping the ghosties away. In honor of his visit, we have selected two horror-themed stories this week. First, Kala talks about The Exorcism if Roland Doe, the inspiration behind the famous movie The Exorcist. And Brittany talks about the curse surrounding the iconic film Rosemary’s Baby. So many people who worked on this film seem to have met a sudden and sad end. The Mizpah is a historic hotel that got its start during a mining boom, and has continued for over a hundred years to provide people with excellent service, a fun experience, and ghosts. Each floor from the fifth down to the basement holds the potential for the paranormal including a Lady in Red, giggling ghostly children, and menacing miners. And what better way to celebrate having one of Duluth's queens of country in the studio than to talk about an outlaw! Brittany talks about Jesse James and his family's farm. This old home was made popular in the 70s when the Dandy family reported being bombarded with paranormal activity while they resided in the old barn house. Objects moved, shadow figures were seen, and there may have even been some possession! And while there were attempts to cleanse the house, it doesn’t not appear those attempts were successful. And Brittany talks about Sloss Furnaces in Birmingham, AL. This historic landmark has a history full of terrible supervisors, industrial accidents, and other non-OSHA approved activities. The spirits who perished there still reside in the building. Who will you see? The man who was sucked into the industrial gears? This lake was built over what was once a thriving community, and though they cleared up some of the things people left behind, there is still plenty left in the depths of the water including building debris, old roads and vehicles, and even graves. Hundreds of deaths have occurred on this lake since its beginning, leaving some people to believe that the lake is haunted or maybe even cursed due to its horrible history. And Brittany tells us all about The House of Wills in Cleveland, Ohio. This former funeral home was once founded and ran by a pretty rad sounding man named John Walter Wills. - saving wombats in Australia
- losing almost two weeks of his life and his teeth
- discovering other mystery holes out there
- possibly finding a cure for cancer?

How does this all happen? You need to listen to find out!

Episode 158: "Art's stirring the pot!"

February 14, 2024

We have a very Art Bell-heavy episode for you today. First, Kala talks about one of the most famous calls on Coast to Coast AM, the Area 51 caller. A frantic man called into the show and claimed that he used to work for Area 51. After a short and panicked conversation, the transmission was lost, and so was the call. Coincidence or interference? People have theories, but no one knows for sure. And Brittany continues on with the story of Mel’s Hole. After the continued investigation into what exactly is going on with mysterious well in the ground, the government took control of the area, and made it known to Mel that he was not supposed to interfere. After another conversation with Art, we learned that Mel had a decision to make: back off and leave it an unanswered mystery, or follow the advice of Art’s listeners and find answers by any means necessary!

Episode 157: “Keep me away from Mel’s Hole”

February 7, 2024

This week Kala starts with the ultimate of all deep sea cryptids, The Kraken! This legendary monster has been blamed for centuries as the reason for the disappearance of ships and sailors. But is it real? And if it’s real, is it paranormal? All we know for sure is most of the ocean is unexplored and really freaking scary. And Brittany tells us all about Mel’s Hole. We promise it’s not as dirty as it sounds, but it does make us giggle. This “bottomless pit” in Washington state is a giant mystery. People have thrown their trash and even dead animals down this hole for years, and it shows no signs of filling up. It runs for miles beneath the surface… what could possibly be down there? What do you think?

Episode 156: True Crime January | Glensheen

January 31, 2024

For our last week of True Crime January we are heading home and revisiting a location from our first-ever episode! Glensheen Mansion is a gorgeous, historic building on the shores of Lake Superior in Duluth, MN. Built for a family that helped build Duluth as we know it today, it would be interesting just for its structure. But it’s got more than that going for it… it’s got ghosts. For decades, employees and visitors alike have reported strange experiences in the house and on the grounds. If you visit you might experience anything from an uneasy feeling all the way to a full blown apparition. There may have been some haunting we’ve questioned in the past, but this one has us fully convinced.

Episode 153: True Crime January | The Savannah Axe Murders

January 10, 2024

We are in the second week of True Crime January 2024, and we are covering "the most diabolical crime ever committed in Savannah," the Savannah Axe Murders, sometimes known as the Gribble House murders. This triple homicide caused widespread panic in the city, and it quickly became national news. After a LARGE string of (bullsh*t) arrests in Savannah, they finally caught the killer. We wish that was the end of the story, but sadly, this is a messy, terrible chapter in U.S. history. The story goes so much deeper than that. It is no wonder spirits have stuck around the property when there are so many pieces that remain unresolved. Content warning: Racism, murder, and descriptions of death

Episode 152: True Crime January | Ed Gein

January 3, 2024

Happy Spooky Wednesday! Happy New Year! Happy first week of True Crime January! We’re starting this month with a discussion on Ed Gein, also known as the Butcher of Plainfield. He was an American murderer, suspected serial killer and grave robber. Gein's crimes, committed around Plainfield, Wisconsin, gathered widespread notoriety in the late 50s after authorities discovered that he had dug up corpses from local graveyards and built furniture from their bones and skin. He also confessed to killing two women, but is suspected of killing more. There are multiple claims of his actions causing paranormal activity in the town, but is there really a ghost? Or just morbid tourists who won’t leave these poor townspeople alone?
